Elfrida
Vipont was born in Manchester in 1902. After studying
history and music, she became a professional singer,
free-lance writer and lecturer. In 1926 she married a
research technologist, R. P. Foulds. During the Second
World War she served as headmistress of the Quaker
Evacuation School at Yealand Manor. She lived for many
years in the north Lancashire village of Yealand Conyers.
The Elfrida Vipont Collection in the John Rylands
University Library, Manchester, U.K., contains manuscript
and typescript copies of published and unpublished works.
It also contains correspondence and other papers
concerning her writings, papers relating to her other
interests in music and Quakerism, audio dictation tapes,
copies of her published books, articles and ephemera.
British author
of nearly two dozen childrens novels, of which the
best known are The Lark in the Morn (1948) and The
Lark on the Wing (1950), both about a Quaker
schoolgirl, Kit Haverard, who becomes a brilliant singer.
The second volume won the CARNEGIE MEDAL. Several books for adults
about the Quaker movement have appeared under her married
name of E. V. Foulds. In 1969 she and Raymond Briggs
produced a classic Picture Book for small children, The
