School readers are
becoming increasingly difficult to find, as most have
been thrown out over the years.
Ones by well-known
authors are generally the most collectable, but people
are now searching for them for many reasons:
illustrations by famous artists, subject, publisher, etc.
Whitcombe were a well-known publisher of high quality
readers early this century and possibly up until the
1950s.
Whitcombe's Story Books, A Trans-Tasman
Survey, by Ian F McLaren, gives a comprehensive coverage.
Published in 1984 by the University of Melbourne Library, in a
limited run of 250 copies.
